Most eReaders are equipped with WiFi and a web browser.

You can borrow eBooks directly with the device and thereby avoid using a PC. The eReader Onleihe is a specially designed version of your Onleihe for the eReader, which focuses on a simple way to browse, borrow and discover titles on the fly.

This manual covers a Tolino eReader.

The Chapters 1-4 can differ visually and functionally from other eReaders. If you are using a different eReader, check the manual of your reader in regards to these topics.

Requirements:

  • eReader with enabled WiFi
  • Adobe ID*
  • Internet Access

* The Adobe ID is used as the standard for eReaders from Tolino up to and including software version 12.2.
In the higher versions it is only required for some mostly English-language titles. From software version 13 and higher, the CARE-DRM is standard.

Switch on WiFi

Tap the "Menu" in the top left of your Tolino and select "Settings" "WLAN". Push the slider to the left and enable the internet connection. Search for your network in the list below and enter the password if necessary.

The eReader Onleihe is a version of your Onleihe that has been specially adapted to eReader and makes it easy to browse, borrow and discover media with your eReader.

Important:

  • All eReaders listed below in principle are compatible with the eReader Onleihe. This compilation is based on the data given by the manufacturer.
  • The eReaders compatible with the Onleihe are not designed for the use of eAudios, even if the device has an audio player.

These eReaders are neither a purchase recommendation nor a guarantee that a device will perform all the desired functions. This also applies to the necessary DRM functionality.
We therefore strongly recommend clarifying the requirements with the dealer before purchasing a device.

The current software version for the Tolino eReader can be downloaded manually from the official support page if required: https://mytolino.de/software-updates/

Hints

Where can I find the button for download in ADE?

If you want to transfer the medium on the PC with a reader other than the Onleihe:reader (e.g. Adobe Digital Editions) or via cable, you can access the downloadable file from the Web Onleihe by clicking on button "Download".

This way you can download the URLLINK.ACSM file and open the contents.

If no "Read Now" button is displayed for a title, no version with CARE-DRM encryption is available for the Onleihe: reader. The title can only be downloaded by using the "Download" button.

Note for Sony Reader PRS-T1 to -T3

The outdated additional software "Sony Reader for PC / MAC" by which copy-protected eBooks can be transferred to Sony eReader is no longer compatible with the current DRM standards. You can therefore no longer download the eBooks from the onleihe using this software.

Notice to Linux users

The use of ePub formats is restricted under Linux. "Wine" must be installed in order to use it.

Install Adobe Digital Editions

Download the free software Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) for Windows or Mac here. Adobe Digital Editions Adobe Digital Editions

Click on "Run". Check "I accept the license agreement" and then select "Next" twice

Enter a target directory as the storage location of the program and click on "Install". Click on "Finish" and finally on "DONE".

Create Adobe ID

In Adobe Digital Editions, click on "Help" → "Authorize Computer".

If you do not have an Adobe ID, click on "Create Adobe ID". You will be redirected to the Adobe registration page. Fill in the fields.

Your email address given here will be your Adobe ID in the future. Note your password. You'll need it in the next step. Finally click on "Register".

Information on the Adobe ID

To protect the eBooks, the Onleihe also uses the copy protection (DRM) from Adobe. In order to be able to transfer eBooks from the Onleihe using Adobe Digital Editions to your eBook reader, you need an Adobe ID. With this ID, you authorize all eBook readers with which you would like to read e-books from the Onleihe in this manner (up to 6 end devices can be registered).

Authorize Adobe Digital Editions with the Adobe ID

Switch back to "Adobe Digital Editions": Enter your Adobe ID and password and click on "Authorize". Finally select "OK".

Delete authorization

If you want to delete the current computer authorization, read here: Remove Adobe ID / deauthorize ADE

Borrow or reserve a title

Visit the Onleihe site of your library. Once you have found a title that you like, hover over "Borrow now" with your mouse, select the desired lending period from the pop-up menu and click on "Borrow now".

If a title is not available, you can reserve it and will be notified by email as soon as it is available.

You will be asked to register at your Onleihe. Select your library and then enter your user number and password according to the information above the login mask.

The exact form of entering the password differs depending on the library and can therefore differ from the example shown here.

Download

Finally click on "Download".

Choose "Open" → "Adobe Digital Editions" → "OK".

Every internet browser behaves a little differently regarding the options for downloading

The window does not appear? In that case your internet browser has probably already saved the file. Go to the "Downloads" folder. The downloaded file is called URLLink.acsm. Right-click on the file and select "Open With" → "Adobe Digital Editions".

ADE is not offered to you in the screen above even though you have installed it? This seems to happen especially on Windows 10. Select "More apps" and then "Find another app on this PC". In the file explorer that opens, select the .exe file directly from ADE under "c:/Programs (x86)/Adobe/Adobe Edition". Your PC will remember this process. In the future, ADE will be directly offered to you when opening eBooks.

Transfer with Adobe Digital Editions

Adobe Digital Editions starts and the eBook opens directly. You are now in reading mode. Click on "Library" in the top left to return to the menu.

Connect your eBook reader to the computer via a USB cable. After a short time your reader will appear under the heading "Devices". Click on the eBook and drag it onto the icon of the eBook reader.

You can now disconnect the eReader from the PC and start reading.

For a successful transfer, the Adobe ID on the eBook reader must match the Adobe ID in "Adobe Digital Editions".

Normally, the Adobe ID of the computer is automatically transferred to the reader when copying. If this is not the case, you must enter the Adobe ID directly in the settings of the reader.

Early return

The return takes place automatically at the end of the lending period. If you would like to return the eBook before the end of the lending period, proceed as follows:

Open Adobe Digital Editions and right-click on the eBook you want to return. Select "Return borrowed medium".

The eBook will then be deleted from your device and your Onleihe account and can be borrowed by other users.

BETA feature "tolino reading experience"

Created on: 2021/03/19
Last updated on: 2021/03/19

The BETA feature “tolino reading experience” is an optional reader that is still in the development phase (BETA).
This feature has been available since software update 14.0.0.

Since the feature is in the test phase, some functions are not yet fully available or do not work correctly.
However, we recommend using this feature, as titles with our DRM in particular benefit from the new developments.

The feature can be activated or deactivated at any time in the settings of the tolino.

To do this, open the tolino's menu and select "Settings"> "Reading settings". There you will find the feature under “tolino reading experience” separately for eBooks with LCP encryption (borrowed media) and eBooks without DRM (purchased media).

To select or deselect the online library media feature, simply set the stylized toggle switch of the "Enable for books with LCP encryption (e.g. Onleihe)" option by tapping "ON" for activated or "OFF" for deactivated.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of the BETA feature?

With the help of this feature, the previously reported defective ePub3 titles can be read on the tolino.

Without this feature, the previous reader is used. This means that such titles can still only be used via a detour on the tolino.

For more information see here.

Please understand that some functions in the BETA feature are not yet fully available or that they cause errors when activated. This includes, for example:

  • Markings, notes cannot be made.
  • Pinch-zoom function (change the font size with 2 fingers by zooming).
  • Returning a borrowed title causes a misleading notice. Please note that the title is returned in the background, but not deleted from the device.
  • Cover display of borrowed titles.
  • Scroll by swiping or pressing a button (e.g. pages can be skipped).
  • Function for setting bookmarks is missing.

Tips for problems with turning pages on eReaders

If you have difficulty turning pages on the eReader, try the following solutions:

  • If you let the medium "breathe" for a moment after opening it, the continuous scrolling while reading should work as usual.
  • Jumping to another place in the eBook or changing chapters may still have an effect, but the skipped content is reloaded and displayed when you select the relevant page again or scroll forward.

If the BETA feature "tolino reading experience" is activated, pages may be skipped regardless of this. More about it here.

Tolino update software version 14.1.0

Status: 2020/12/15

The Version 14.1.0 has been rolled out on all Tolino eReader models since November 25, 2020 and can be downloaded manually from the Tolino website if required.

The Tolino Shine 1 is excluded from the update. For this model, Tolino has not provided any new updates since software version 10.5.0.

The following changes and improvements are included in the update:

  • The query with the recommendation to activate the BETA feature “tolino reading experience” when borrowing a title for the first time that is encrypted with the CARE copy protection has been removed
  • The stability of the BETA feature has been increased, "white pages" and "missing text" errors or the scrolling of pages have been greatly reduced
  • Returning borrowed titles when the BETA feature is activated is now possible without an error message
  • Zooming with two fingers (pinch zoom) is no problem again when the BETA feature is activated
  • The font sizes have been optimized for the BETA feature
  • The page turn swipe function is now integrated in the BETA feature
  • The function of tapping on the back to scroll (tap2flip function) has been added to the BETA feature
  • The last read book sleepscreen works again

Without the activation of the BETA feature, the previously reported defective ePub3 titles can still not be read on the Tolino!

Further information on the feature can be found in the entry Tolino update software version 14.0.x on our help page.

Tolino update software version 14.0.x

The new software version 14.1.0 has been rolled out for all Tolino eReader models since November 25, 2020. All information here.

The Tolino Shine 1 is excluded from the update. For this model Tolino has not provided any new updates since software version 10.5.0.

After the update to version 14.0.1, the following functions and improvements are available:

  • A loading bar is shown when opening media
  • Improved CODE / passphrase query when loading LCP / CARE titles for the first time
  • New architecture for rendering content with visibly better performance and more intuitive book menu (BETA feature)
  • The software has also been improved, bugs fixed and more stability ensured

What is the BETA feature “tolino reading experience” all about?
The BETA feature “tolino reading experience” offers an optional reader that is still in the development phase (BETA).
This feature has been available since software update 14.0.0.

=> Since the feature is in the test phase, some functions are not yet fully available.

When you first download a title from the Onleihe with LCP or CARE DRM, on Tolinos with the software update 14.0.x a query automatically appears which asks you if this feature shall be activated. The activation option is already preselected and we also recommend using the feature, as titles with our DRM in particular benefit from the new developments.

The feature can be activated or deactivated separately for eBooks with LCP / CARE and eBooks without DRM at any time in the settings of the Tolino in the menu item “Reading settings” under “tolino reading experience (beta)”. To do this, simply set the stylized toggle switch of the option "EPUBs with LCP encryption (recommended)" to "ON" for activated or "OFF" for deactivated.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of the BETA feature?
With this feature the previously reported defect ePub3 titles can be read on the Tolino.

Without this feature the previous reader is used. This means that such titles can still only be used via a detour on the Tolino.

For more information see here.

Please understand that some functions in the BETA feature are not yet fully available or that they cause errors when activated. This includes e.g.:
  • Markings, notes cannot be made.
  • Pinch-Zoom function (change the font size with 2 fingers by zooming).
  • Returning the loaned titles causes a misleading notice. Please note that the title is returned in the background, but not deleted from the device.
  • Cover display of borrowed titles Scroll by swiping or pressing a button (e.g. pages can be skipped).
  • Function for setting bookmarks is missing.

Tolino => "An error has occured and all actions have been aborted. Please try again..."

With software version 14.0.x, Tolino has introduced the optional BETA feature "tolino reading experience". When it's activated the error described here no longer occurs.

Therefore, if this error occurs, we recommend updating the Tolino to the latest version and activating the above mentioned feature.

All information on this can be found in the article Tolino Update software version 14.0.x.

The following error can occur with some titles, but only on Tolino readers:

"An error has occured and all actions have been aborted. Please try again later or restart your tolino"

If you try opening the title again, there will be a message displayed that the title may include multimedia content that could lead to errors.

Even if you press "yes" to load the title anyway, the title will not be loaded.

The message about the possible multimedia content in the title is not the actual error.

This message only indicates that the format of the title is "ePub3", which could include multimedia content.

In eBooks from some publishers, such as the Ullstein Verlag, a corresponding note will appear indicating the ePub3 format of the medium.

There are several options to read titles with this error:

1. You can read them in the Onleihe app on Smartphones or Tablets with Android or iOS.

You find a manual for the Onleihe app here: Borrowing with the Onleihe app

2. You can download the URLLink.acsm of the title to your PC and then transfer this URLLink.acsm to your Tolino via cable.

To do this, your tolino has to be authorized with an Adobe ID.

Step by step instructions:

  1. Delete the file of the affected eBook from your Tolino eReader.
  2. Open the browser on your PC and log into your Onleihe account in the Web Onleihe of your library.

Tolino => "Unfortunately, at the moment LCP DRM is not supportet by your device."

If you receive this error message, the item "LCP/CARE" or "LCP" is missing on your Tolino under "My accounts".

In software versions prior to 14.0.0, especially 12.2.0 and 13.2.1, the following error message appears instead:
"A system error has occurred. Please try again later, or contact customer service."

To fix this, please select "Setup now" or "Log in now" under "My accounts".

After you pressed "Log in now" you will be transferred to the register screen of Thalia.

You don't have to register if you don't want to and can go back now with the back arrow on the top left.

Now you just have to press "Exit" and LCP / CARE will be displayed under "my Accounts".

Instead of the cover, a sequence of numbers and letters appears on the Tolino

This error occurs whenever something went wrong while downloading a title.

The sequence of numbers and letters instead of the cover shows the file name of the medium.
Such files are unusable and must therefore be deleted in any case.

The most common causes of this error are:
- bad Internet connection
- Performance problems of the eReader
- manual cancellation of the download
- full memory of the eReader

Please check the points above and go through the following solution steps:
- Delete the affected file from all devices
- Ensure a sufficiently stable and good WiFi connection
- Ensure that there is enough free space on the device
- Activate the BETA feature "tolino reading experience" for LCP encryption in the settings under "Reading settings"
- Load tracks directly from the Tolino
- Do not make any further inputs on the eReader after the process of transferring / loading the file has started
