Most E-Readers are equipped with WiFi and a web browser.

You can borrow E-Books directly with the device and thereby avoid using a PC. The E-Reader Onleihe is a specially designed version of your Onleihe for the E-Reader, which focuses on a simple way to browse, borrow and discover titles on the fly.

This manual covers a tolino E-Reader.

The Chapters 1-4 can differ visually and functionally from other E-Readers. If you are using a different E-Reader, check the manual of your reader in regards to these topics.

You can find our explanatory video "Erste Schritte auf dem Tolino" here.

Requirements:

  • E-Reader with enabled WiFi
  • Adobe ID*
  • Internet Access

* The Adobe ID is used as the standard for E-Readers from tolino up to and including software version 12.2.
In the higher versions it is only required for some mostly English-language titles. From software version 13 upwards CARE-DRM is standard. Irrespective of this, titles that are saved as PDFs always require a valid Adobe ID, since media of this type of file are in general encrypted with Adobe's copy protection.

Switch on WiFi

Tap the "Menu" in the top left of your tolino and select "Settings" "WLAN". Push the slider to the left and enable the internet connection. Search for your network in the list below and enter the password if necessary.

Whether the internet is enabled can also be seen when the icon at the top right corner is showing.

Adobe ID

To be able to read an E-Book with a copyright protection you'll need an Adobe ID. Go back to the menu and select "My Accounts" and then "Adobe DRM".

Enter your Adobe ID and your password. If you do not already have an Adobe ID, you can create it by registering with Adobe. After a successful registration, the message "Authorization successful"

appears.

The web-browser of the eReader

Open the menu of your tolino and select "Web browser".

Enter the address of your Onleihe in the browser. Then, tap "Go" on your keyboard.

Save the adress of your Onleihe

To save the address of your Onleihe long-tap the bookmark icon. This will save the current page and the icon will turn black. If you open the browser in the
future, you do not have to enter the address again. Just tap the bookmark icon and select the website of your Onleihe from the list of bookmarks.

Important:

If you have already saved the Onleihe call as a bookmark in the past and this does not work, simply overwrite the address and add the bookmark again.

Log-in

Please log-in with the user data of your library. If your library is part of a consortium, select your library first. To do this, tap the "Library" field. In large
consortiums it is recommended to enter the name of your city in the field above. After entering the first 3-4 characters your library's name will be suggested
to you. You can also skip the login procedure via the X at the top right. A log-in will be mandatory if you want to borrow or reserve a title.

Currently, please do not (!) save the password - on a tolino - to log in to the library. Please select the option "cancel".

The login takes place normally, but the password is not saved and must always be re-entered.

Password storage will be corrected by tolino in one of the next updates.

If you have already saved the password, please go to "My Accounts" in your tolino menu and delete the web browser data there.

You can enter the umlauts ä, ö and ü by pressing and holding the letters a, o and u.

My Media

After your log-in, the "My Media" page will be opened. Here you have an overview of your currently borrowed and reserved titles. Tap "Read" to download
a borrowed title directly to your device. Reservations can be found at the end of the list. They can also be edited or deleted.

  • open the imprint.
  • get in contact with your Onleihe.
  • open this manual.
  • log out.

Return a title

The title will automatically be returned at the end of the loan period. You may also return the title early at any time.
To do this with a tolino, tap and hold the title you wish to return, then choose "Return" from the pop-up menu. The title will be made available for the next
user and disappear from your account.

Other E-Reader devices do not have the "return" option. However, titles can still be returned early by using Adobe Digital Editions on your PC or via the
Onleihe-App. Read more here under "how to return a title early".

The E-Reader Onleihe is a version of your Onleihe that has been specially adapted to E-Reader and makes it easy to browse, borrow and discover media with your E-Reader.

Important:

  • All E-Readers listed below in principle are compatible with the E-Reader Onleihe. This compilation is based on the data given by the manufacturer.
  • E-readers not listed below, such as Sony or Kobo devices, are not actively supported by Onleihe. Therefore, no functionality can be guaranteed in these cases.
  • The E-Readers compatible with the Onleihe are not designed for the use of E-Audios, even if the device has an audio player.

These E-Readers are neither a purchase recommendation nor a guarantee that a device will perform all the desired functions. This also applies to the necessary DRM functionality.
We therefore strongly recommend clarifying the requirements with the dealer before purchasing a device.

The current software version for the tolino E-Reader can be downloaded manually from the official support page if required: https://mytolino.de/software-updates/

Hints

Where can I find the button for download in ADE?

If you want to transfer the medium on the PC with a reader other than the Onleihe:reader (e.g. Adobe Digital Editions) or via cable, you can access the downloadable file from the Web Onleihe by clicking on button "Download".

This way you can download the URLLINK.ACSM file and open the contents.

If no "Read Now" button is displayed for a title, no version with CARE-DRM encryption is available for the Onleihe: reader. The title can only be downloaded by using the "Download" button.

Note for tolino

All E-Reader models from tolino vision 6 and epos 3 are no longer recognized by Adobe Digital Editions (ADE). More about this here.

Note for Sony Reader PRS-T1 to -T3

The outdated additional software "Sony Reader for PC / MAC" by which copy-protected E-Books can be transferred to Sony E-Reader is no longer compatible with the current DRM standards. You can therefore no longer download the E-Books from the onleihe using this software.

Notice to Linux users

The use of ePub formats is restricted under Linux. "Wine" must be installed in order to use it.

Install Adobe Digital Editions

Download the free software Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) for Windows or Mac here. Adobe Digital Editions Adobe Digital Editions

Click on "Run". Check "I accept the license agreement" and then select "Next" twice

Enter a target directory as the storage location of the program and click on "Install". Click on "Finish" and finally on "DONE".

Create Adobe ID

In Adobe Digital Editions, click on "Help" → "Authorize Computer".

If you do not have an Adobe ID, click on "Create Adobe ID". You will be redirected to the Adobe registration page. Fill in the fields.

Your email address given here will be your Adobe ID in the future. Note your password. You'll need it in the next step. Finally click on "Register".

Information on the Adobe ID

To protect the E-Books, the Onleihe also uses the copy protection (DRM) from Adobe. In order to be able to transfer E-Books from the Onleihe using Adobe Digital Editions to your E-Book reader, you need an Adobe ID. With this ID, you authorize all E-Book readers with which you would like to read e-books from the Onleihe in this manner (up to 6 end devices can be registered).

Authorize Adobe Digital Editions with the Adobe ID

Switch back to "Adobe Digital Editions": Enter your Adobe ID and password and click on "Authorize". Finally select "OK".

Delete authorization

If you want to delete the current computer authorization, read here: Remove Adobe ID / deauthorize ADE

Borrow or reserve a title

Visit the Onleihe site of your library. Once you have found a title that you like, hover over "Borrow now" with your mouse, select the desired lending period from the pop-up menu and click on "Borrow now".

If a title is not available, you can reserve it and will be notified by email as soon as it is available.

You will be asked to register at your Onleihe. Select your library and then enter your user number and password according to the information above the login mask.

The exact form of entering the password differs depending on the library and can therefore differ from the example shown here.

Download

Finally click on "Download".

Choose "Open" → "Adobe Digital Editions" → "OK".

Every internet browser behaves a little differently regarding the options for downloading

My tolino vision 6 is no longer recognized by Adobe Digital Editions. What can I do?
Since the tolino vision 6, a new technological process has been used to exchange data between the eReader and the PC/laptop via USB connection.
As a result, the eReader is recognized by the computer as an Android device and is therefore no longer supported by Adobe Digital Editions (ADE).
All information on the subject and a solution can be found in the associated FAQ on mytolino.de.

The window does not appear?

In that case your internet browser has probably already saved the file. Go to the "Downloads" folder. The downloaded file is called URLLink.acsm. Right-click on the file and select "Open With" → "Adobe Digital Editions".

ADE is not offered to you in the screen above even though you have installed it?
This seems to happen especially on Windows 10. Select "More apps" and then "Find another app on this PC". In the file explorer that opens, select the .exe file directly from ADE under "c:/Programs (x86)/Adobe/Adobe Edition". Your PC will remember this process. In the future, ADE will be directly offered to you when opening E-Books.

Transfer with Adobe Digital Editions

Adobe Digital Editions starts and the E-Book opens directly. You are now in reading mode. Click on "Library" in the top left to return to the menu.

Connect your E-Book reader to the computer via a USB cable. After a short time your reader will appear under the heading "Devices". Click on the E-Book and drag it onto the icon of the E-Book reader.

You can now disconnect the E-Reader from the PC and start reading.

For a successful transfer, the Adobe ID on the E-Book reader must match the Adobe ID in "Adobe Digital Editions".

Normally, the Adobe ID of the computer is automatically transferred to the reader when copying. If this is not the case, you must enter the Adobe ID directly in the settings of the reader.

Early return

The return takes place automatically at the end of the lending period. If you would like to return the E-Book before the end of the lending period, proceed as follows:

Open Adobe Digital Editions and right-click on the E-Book you want to return. Select "Return borrowed medium".

The E-Book will then be deleted from your device and your Onleihe account and can be borrowed by other users.

Amazon Kindle and Onleihe

Created on: 2022/10/31
Last updated: 2022/10/31

In May 2022 it was announced that Amazon's Kindle E-Readers would in future make it possible to read E-Books in ePub format, which was previously not supported.

This does not apply to copy-protected content, which continues to prevent the use of E-Books from Onleihe.

The Amazon Fire tablets, which support the Onleihe app, are an exception.

You can find more information about the use of ePubs on the Kindle here:

BETA feature "tolino reading experience"

Created on: 2021/03/19
Last updated on: 2022/11/09

The BETA feature “tolino reading experience” is an optional reader that is still in the development phase (BETA).
This feature has been available since software update 14.0.0.

For the YouTube video about the BETA feature see here.

According to tolino, the BETA feature was extensively revised with the 15.3 update. Most of the E-Books we have tested with version 15.3 so far could be used with the BETA feature deactivated. With the 16.0.0 update, activation of the BETA feature may be required for early returns, depending on the E-Book.

Since the feature is in the test phase, some functions are not yet fully available or do not work correctly.

The feature can be activated or deactivated at any time in the settings of the tolino.

To do this, open the tolino's menu and select "Settings"> "Reading settings". There you will find the feature under “tolino reading experience” separately for E-Books with LCP encryption (borrowed media) and E-Books without DRM (purchased media).

To select or deselect the online library media feature, simply set the stylized toggle switch of the "Enable for books with LCP encryption (e.g. Onleihe)" option by tapping "ON" for activated or "OFF" for deactivated.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of the BETA feature?

With the help of this feature, the previously reported defective ePub3 titles can be read on the tolino.

Without this feature, the previous reader is used. This means that such titles possibly can still only be used via a detour on the tolino.

For more information see here.

Please understand that some functions in the BETA feature are not yet fully available or that they cause errors when activated. This includes, for example:

  • Markings, notes cannot be made.
  • Pinch-zoom function (change the font size with 2 fingers by zooming).
  • Returning a borrowed title causes a misleading notice. Please note that the title is returned in the background, but not deleted from the device.
  • Cover display of borrowed titles.
  • Scroll by swiping or pressing a button (e.g. pages can be skipped).
  • Function for setting bookmarks is missing.

tolino => "An error has occured and all actions have been aborted. Please try again..."

Created on: 2020/07/11
Last updated on: 2022/06/10

The following error can occur with some titles, but only on tolino readers:

"An error has occured and all actions have been aborted. Please try again later or restart your tolino"

If you try opening the title again, there will be a message displayed that the title may include multimedia content that could lead to errors.

Even if you press "yes" to load the title anyway, the title will not be loaded.

Possible solutions:

Activation of the BETA feature "tolino reading experience"

With software version 14.0.x, tolino introduced the optional BETA feature "tolino reading experience", which can be activated to solve the error described above.

Therefore, if this error occurs, we recommend updating your tolino to the latest version and if necessary activating the BETA feature. You'll find more about it here.

Direct transfer to the tolino without Adobe Digital Editions

  1. Open your library's Onleihe website on your PC and log in.
  2. Find the book you want to read and borrow it.
  3. Connect your tolino E-Reader to your PC with a USB cable.
  4. Then copy the ACSM file (file name "URLLink") that you downloaded from the Onleihe website from your download folder into the "Books" folder of the tolino E-Reader.
  5. Eject your tolino E-Reader from the PC and disconnect the USB cable. The borrowed book will now appear in "My books" on your tolino E-Reader.
  6. Make sure that your tolino E-Reader is connected to the WLAN and that an Adobe ID is stored. Touch the cover of the borrowed book on your tolino E-Reader. Now the E-Book reader converts the borrowed E-Book and you can read it with Adobe copy protection.

Tips for problems with turning pages on E-Readers

If you have difficulty turning pages on the E-Reader, try the following solutions:

  • If you let the medium "breathe" for a moment after opening it, the continuous scrolling while reading should work as usual.
  • Jumping to another place in the E-Book or changing chapters may still have an effect, but the skipped content is reloaded and displayed when you select the relevant page again or scroll forward.
  • Tolino => deactivation of the BETA feature "tolino reading experience". You'll find more about it here.
  • Tolino => Download the affected titles from the Web-Onleihe to the PC and transfer them from there to the tolino. More about this here.

The problem of skipping pages when turning the pages is one of the possible error patterns of the BETA feature, which is still in the test phase and is therefore not fully developed. Tolino is already aware of this - the error should be fixed with a future software update. A specific date for this has not yet been given.

Titles in PDF format can only be opened on E-Readers with an Adobe ID

Opening Onleihe titles in PDF format still requires a valid Adobe ID for E-Readers from tolino and PocketBook, since E-Media of this file type can only be used on the E-Readers from the two manufacturers with Adobe DRM.

For all other E-Book file formats, the CARE-DRM copy protection procedure is standard for tolinos from software version 13 and for PocketBooks from software version 6.3.
According to tolino, compatibility of PDF titles with CARE-DRM is not planned.

We received feedback from PocketBook that compatibility of PDF files with CARE-DRM is conceivable in the future and should be checked accordingly.

tolino => Registration with the Onleihe not possible, you always end up on the start page

To correct this error, go to "My accounts" in the menu of your tolino E-Reader and delete the web browser data there.

It should then be possible to log in to the online library again in the tolino E-Reader's web browser.

tolino => "Unfortunately, at the moment LCP DRM is not supportet by your device."

If you receive this error message, the item "LCP/CARE" or "LCP" is missing on your tolino under "My accounts".

In software versions prior to 14.0.0, especially 12.2.0 and 13.2.1, the following error message appears instead:
"A system error has occurred. Please try again later, or contact customer service."

To fix this, please select "Setup now" or "Log in now" under "My accounts".

After you pressed "Log in now" you will be transferred to the register screen of Thalia.

You don't have to register if you don't want to and can go back now with the back arrow on the top left.

Now you just have to press "Exit" and LCP / CARE will be displayed under "my Accounts".

Choosing your library in the E-Reader Onleihe

In Onleihe library consortiums you can search for your library via a search field.

When you press on "Library" on the login page, you will be transferred to a page with a search field.

Below the search field are the first nine libraries of the consortium, displayed in alphabetical order.

Once you start typing in the name of your library in the search field, the list of displayed libraries will update accordingly.

You can also search for the name of the city that your library is in.

How do I download multiple titles on my tolino, one after the other, without having to go back to the starting page and login anew each time?

  • After the successful download of an E-Book, a notification window opens with the options "Open book" and "Continue surfing".
  • Tap on "Continue surfing" to return to the start page of the E-Reader-Onleihe.
  • Finally, tap on the book icon in the top left.
  • You are now back in your media account and can start the next download directly from there.

Instead of the cover, a sequence of numbers and letters appears on the Tolino

This error occurs whenever something went wrong while downloading a title.

The sequence of numbers and letters instead of the cover shows the file name of the medium.
Such files are unusable and must therefore be deleted in any case.

The most common causes of this error are:
- bad Internet connection
- Performance problems of the E-Reader
- manual cancellation of the download
- full memory of the E-Reader

Please check the points above and go through the following solution steps:
- Delete the affected file from all devices
- Ensure a sufficiently stable and good WiFi connection
- Ensure that there is enough free space on the device
- Activate the BETA feature "tolino reading experience" for LCP encryption in the settings under "Reading settings"
- Load tracks directly from the Tolino
- Do not make any further inputs on the E-Reader after the process of transferring / loading the file has started

Saving your login information on your E-Reader

The ability to save your login information on your E-Reader depends on the device and thus on the manufacturer.

The E-Reader Onleihe itself is configured in a way, that it saves login information with cookies.

Some devices delete those cookies every time the browser is closed. In those cases the login informations can't be saved on the device.
